Georgia contractor licensing: the $2,500 rule

By the Atlanta Home Upgrades editorial team · Updated 2026-10-20

Georgia licensing protects homeowners on bigger jobs.

The rule

A state residential or general contractor license is required when the total value of the work, or the contractor's compensation if higher, exceeds $2,500. Contracts for that work by an unlicensed contractor may be unenforceable.

Verify

Look up the license on the Georgia Secretary of State's site.
